About
Balerion, popularly referred to by the alias ‘The Black Dread, is one of the older dragons in the GRRM universe
- and the only dragon who has actually spent time living in Valyria before the Doom. Famous for being the
largest dragon and for his first rider being Aegon the Conqueror.
Feats
Known for his impressive, massive size, Balerion assisted greatly in Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. He had flames
that could melt steel and stone, and could fuse sand into glass. Balerion’s flames are responsible for the
creation of the Iron Throne - the throne made from the swords of all those his rider Aegon defeated, the
swords melded together by Balerion’s flames. A key player in the conquest that made the Targaryen dynasty.
Death
Balerion died of old age around 94 AC, living up to 200 years old. Some theorize that he could have lived longer
if he and his rider Aerea hadn’t taken damage after running away and presumably going to Valyria, where
they were attacked and infested with what seemed to be firewyrms. Died with Viserys I Targaryen as his rider.
